Surprisingly good March 12, 2010 Peter Lee (Manchester ,United Kingdom) Last year, Little Boots won all of the awards for being the one to watch in 2009 and yet, despite her album being not as bad as some made out, she didn't do anywhere near as well as some of the acts she beat to the prize, such as the superb Florence and the Machine. This year Ellie Goulding has won the prizes, but it could well be that Marina and the Diamonds will win the hearts of the public.
This is a surprisingly good album. Previously I'd only heard the single "Hollywood" and, despite the "oh my God you look just like Shakira" bit in the middle which was like fingernails on a blackboard for me, I liked the rest of the track, and her delivery was extremely distinctive. I bought the album on a whim and at the first listen I felt it was okay, a few good tracks surrounded by some padding. However, I found myself singing some of the songs I'd felt were the weaker tracks in work the next day, and upon revisiting the album that night I realised how good it was.
Unlike Florence's album, this is straight pop music, but the standard is high. Marina's voice may irritate some - a blend of Lene Lovich, PJ Harvey, and Russel Mael from Sparks - but it works well with the songs and she keeps the tics to a minimum for the most part. Talking of the songs, all were written by Marina either individually or with one or two others, and there are no cover versions. Interestingly there are also no real ballads - yes, there are a couple of slower, more orchestral-sounding tracks (e.g. "Rootless" and "Numb") but they're not your traditional ballad per se. One minor niggle concerns the titles - some may find the likes of "Shampain" (pronounced "champagne") and "Hermit The Frog" a little irritating, but again the songs themselves are good.
Of the tracks, my personal favourites are "Are You Satisfied?", "Shampain", "I Am Not A Robot", "Mowgli's Road", "Oh No!" and, for me the best of all, "Guilty". It's all unashamedly poppy, very upbeat, very enjoyable and above all else, very good. A star may have been born here.
Fabulous album March 8, 2010 munch (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I haven't enjoyed an album this much for a very long time. Brilliant, uplifting and totally addictive.

Having listned to the much HYPED debut album from Marina and the diamonds i can't say i was impressed. Songs on here sound like she's trying far too hard trying to copy Lady GaGa's vocal style with none of the catchy hooks and melodies which permiate her songs. Very disppointing indeed. It's not that the albums terribe or anything, just thats extremley average. i much preferred Ellie Gouldings new album which is a far more assured debut than this.
Definitely a jewel of an album March 4, 2010 Richard Bowen (Forres, Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have listened to this album numerous times since receiving it last week and cannot fault it. The very distinctive voice, with traces of Tori Amos, Amy Macdonald and Alison Moyet provide a perfect vehicle for the interesting lyrics and lively tracks. , overall an excellent album it will be a hard one to follow.
A star in the making. March 2, 2010 Mr. J. Hooker (Milton Keynes UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Marina is going to be huge, this is pop at it's best and orginal. Comparison with Kate Bush is merited, the album is a breath of fresh air.
