Album Description Hailed as one of Americana and folk music's most esteemed artists, Patty Griffin has sold over a million records and was awarded with the Americana Music Association's highest honor as "Artist Of The Year" in 2007. Griffin has received multiple Grammy nominations and has toured the country relentlessly, creating avid followers wherever her music is heard. She is a natural songbird that can hush an audience with her performances, but Griffin's power is in her passionate storytelling with a voice that is mournful yet uplifting. Patty Griffin's new album, Downtown Church, is a collection of Gospel-infused songs produced by longtime friend, bandmate and acclaimed producer Buddy Miller at the Downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN. Downtown Church brings to life Gospel songs that have influenced contemporary music in a way that only Patty Griffin can do.

Great gospel feeling March 15, 2010 Rebecca J. Cook (tucson, az USA) This is not a perfect recording (some songs definitely work better than others), but Patty Griffin's soulful, bluesy and gospel-vibe voice completely won me over in the end. Recorded in the sanctuary of a Nashville Presbyterian Church, the music does indeed have kind of a sacred feel to it, especially apparent and powerful on House of Gold, Coming Home to Me, Never Grow Old, and Waiting for My Child. By the time the CD concludes with a mesmerizingly simple piano and voice rendition of All Creatures of Our God and King I was primed for a hymn sing. The only reason I didn't give Downtown Church five stars is that, while there are no clinker tracks here, it's thematically a bit uneven. For example, I liked "I Smell a Rat" but somehow it doesn't quite fit with the rest of the songs. If you're a Patty Griffin fan, though, you'll definitely want to own this CD.
You will grow spiritually March 15, 2010 Janniepoo Patty Griffin's music is the Soundtrack to my life. At first I was uncertain about a "Gospel" album, then I listened to the samples on Amazon. I have been playing this CD in my car ever since receiving it. The layering of the instruments is complicated and beautiful.
countyry soul March 12, 2010 Michael J. Cody this album is a mix of Gospel and country. Griffin has a slightly twangy country voice, but knows how to bring the soul in the Gospel songs. They are of the black church variety. Actually I wish the whole album would have been "get down Gospel" music.
Downtown Church March 9, 2010 Mark Shea (Martha's Vineyard) One of Patty's best's. Her gospel sound is alive and deep. What a great change for her.I highly recommend!!!
Downtown Church by Patty Griffin March 7, 2010 S. R. Nelson (Mpls, MN) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was very disappointed by the music on this CD. I have other CD's by the artist and have always liked her music. This CD, however is boring and slow. There were maybe one or two songs that I liked and will probably sell it to a used record store.
